Welcome to Edge Lane & Clayton Methodist Church

ABOUT US

We are a friendly and welcoming Methodist community serving the people of Droylsden and Clayton in East Manchester. Each Sunday, around 20–60 people gather for worship, fellowship, and friendship — a joyful mix of ages, cultures, and experiences, united by a shared faith in Christ.

Our Story

The story of our church family reaches back to 1883, when Mrs John Coomer laid the foundation stone for a new school and chapel on Edge Lane, Droylsden. That first Methodist congregation became a vibrant centre of worship and community life for generations, faithfully serving its neighbourhood and adapting to the changing needs of local people.

Meanwhile, in Clayton, another Methodist fellowship was growing. Clayton Methodist Church began in 1901, meeting in the Clayton Liberal Club before its own building on North Road was completed in 1905 as a Sunday School hall, costing just under £1,500. In 1963, members from Ashton New Road Methodist Church joined the Clayton congregation, strengthening the community’s ministry and outreach.

Coming Together

In 2022, the two congregations of Edge Lane and Clayton united to form a single family of faith — Edge Lane & Clayton Methodist Church. This coming-together brought two rich histories into one future, blending traditions, friendships, and a shared commitment to serve God and the wider community.

Our Home Today

We now worship at the Church of the Epiphany, Merton Drive (off Edge Lane), Droylsden M43 6BH — a modern, purpose-built church opened in 2012–2013. The building is shared with our friends at St Andrew’s Church (Church of England), reflecting a strong spirit of partnership and unity across denominations. Together, we use this space to worship, learn, and serve our community in Christ’s name.

Our Mission

Today, Edge Lane & Clayton Methodist Church continues to stand as a beacon of hope and hospitality. We celebrate our Methodist heritage while embracing new ways of sharing God’s love, reaching out to our neighbours, and growing together in faith.

Wherever you are on your journey, you’ll find a warm welcome here.
